How to Break Eggs and Escape Guards
SnakeDesert · $3/s
TigerDesert · $20/s
SphinxDesert · $230/sAnatomy of a run
Every steal is the same four actions: find an egg, break it, take the animal, and return to the Safe Zone pen. The failure mode is always the same too — the guardian catches you while you are carrying an animal, you drop it, and the run is wasted.
The key detail is timing. Breaking the shell is what draws the guardian's attention, so your exposure starts before you pick anything up. Players who plan the exit route before the first swing lose far fewer animals than players who decide where to run once the shell opens.
Controls you actually need
Left click with a pickaxe equipped breaks the shell. The interact key (E on keyboard) takes the hatched animal. There is no separate 'steal' button: taking an animal is the steal.
Pickaxe Power shortens how long the shell takes. Speed decides whether you survive the walk back. Those are the only two stats in the loop.
| Action | Input | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Break the egg | Left click with pickaxe | Alerts the zone guardian |
| Take the animal | Interact (E on keyboard) | You are now carrying, and slower |
| Return to base | Walk / run | The guardian closes distance |
| Bank the animal | Place in the pen | Starts passive income |
Why you cannot steal in a zone you can enter
Zones are open to explore, but the steal is gated by the zone's Speed requirement. If your effective Speed is below the published gate, the guardian will catch you on the return trip no matter how good the route is. Entry without the Speed is a sightseeing trip, not a farm.
That is why the site treats the published number as a value to reach before committing to a carry rather than a number to touch exactly. A buffer also covers the slowdown from carrying a large animal.
Guardian behaviour by zone
Each zone has its own guardian and they get faster as you go out. Forest is forgiving enough to learn in. Snowy is where guard pressure starts to matter more than egg health. Galaxy's guardian is a three-headed hydra that makes the return the hardest part of the game so far, and Planet X carries a NIGHTMARE rating.
The practical counter is the same everywhere: do not carry a high-value animal past a guardian between you and the Safe Zone. Wait for the patrol to rotate instead of racing it.
Five habits that stop failed runs
Plan the exit before the first swing.
Take one animal per trip until your Speed has a buffer above the gate.
Clear cheap eggs early in a session and carry the valuable one last.
Bank immediately on arrival instead of breaking another egg.
If a run keeps failing at the same point, buy for the bottleneck: trail for travel, pickaxe for breaking.
How to tell what is actually blocking you
The steps above describe the fix. This part is about knowing whether the fix is the one you need, and how to tell a real improvement from a lucky run.
Diagnose before you change anything
Work out whether the run fails on the break or on the carry, because the two have opposite fixes. If the guardian reaches you while the shell is still cracking, your exposure window is too long and the lever is the pickaxe. If the shell opens and you are caught on the way back, the pickaxe is irrelevant and the lever is Speed or the exit route. A run that fails in the same spot every time is telling you which one it is; a run that fails in a different spot each time is usually a route problem.
Check that the change actually landed
Test the route before you test the gear. Take a run in a zone you can comfortably survive and walk the exit path without breaking anything. If that walk is clean, the danger is the time you spend on the egg; if the walk itself draws the guardian, no purchase fixes it and you need Speed first. After changing gear, repeat the identical route, because a new route makes the comparison meaningless — the only variable you want between two runs is the change you made.
Common misreads
The usual misread is that a bigger pickaxe makes you safer. It shortens the break, which helps, but it does nothing once you are carrying: the carry is the slow half of the run and Speed is what shortens it. The second is assuming you can steal anywhere you can walk, when zones are open to explore and the steal is gated separately. The third is banking a second egg on the same trip, which doubles your exposure before anything has paid out.
Questions this guide gets asked
What happens if a guard catches you?
You drop the animal you are carrying and the run is lost. The pickaxe swings and the hatch time are gone with it.
Can you steal from other players?
The loop is about stealing animals from zones, not robbing players. Anything promising player-to-player theft is describing a different game.
Does a bigger pickaxe help me escape?
No. Pickaxe Power shortens shell breaking only; escaping is a Speed and route problem.
